The page holds maybe eight or nine figures, layered and overlapping in ink with passages of grey and yellow wash at the margins. None of them are trying to be a finished drawing. What they are doing is tracking the essential gesture of each pose — the lean of a hip, the angle of a head turned, the reach of an arm — and they do this with a line that moves quickly but knows where it's going. The pen commits. Some of these figures are two or three strokes and they're already standing. Others got more time: the central reclining figure carries internal structure in its ribcage and shoulders, the lower-left head has wash layered over ink to build real tonal depth in the face.

There's a geography to the sheet that feels deliberate even if it wasn't planned. The upper section is ghostlier — lighter marks, more searching, figures that dissolve before they fully arrive. Moving down and to the left, the ink gets denser, the wash comes in, and that face in the lower corner emerges with more tonal attention than anything else on the page. Whether this tracks the sequence of poses or just the accumulation of the hand's confidence doesn't matter much. The effect is a sheet that gathers energy as the eye moves across it. The figures on the right edge — scratchier, more tangled, drawn with a different kind of urgency — feel like the pen was running out of time but not out of interest.

The wash does something useful here. It breaks the page out of pure line into something atmospheric, and it gives the eye softer ground to rest between the sharper ink marks. A sheet of quick gestures can easily read as a warm-up exercise and nothing more. This one doesn't, because the figures jostle against each other in a way that feels like a continuous practice of attention rather than a series of isolated attempts. The page records not just poses but the act of looking, and looking again, and looking differently each time.
